Customer Data Engineer

Role Profile
The Customer Data Engineer is an exciting role within the Data Services team at Lloyd’s List Intelligence, the global leaders in geospatial Big Data vessel tracking and analysis of more than 400,000 ships. This role will be part of a team that is responsible for delivering tailored data sets to customers as well as driving continual enhancements to our data quality to improve our customer experience and support revenue growth.
This position presents an exciting opportunity for a results-driven individual with a strong understanding of complex data structures and database manipulation and willing to learn more about commercial decision-making and gain a deeper understanding of customer-led product development. Maritime knowledge would be a distinct advantage but much more important is a passion for large scale data management, data delivery and a desire to exceed customer expectations.
This is a full-time permanent role reporting to the Data Services Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure incoming data requests are properly evaluated, prepared, and delivered in a timely and accurate fashion.
Produce and validate data sets using complex SQL based on technical specifications using multiple databases and warehouses.
Support pre-sales and sales colleagues by providing tailored data sets and technical support to fit customer needs.
Providing post-sales support to customers.
Explore ways to improve our data delivery processes, data cleaning and data quality.
Maintain SLAs to ensure data sets for customers are generated, tested and delivered in a timely manner.
What we are looking for:
Essential
Minimum 2 years’ experience working with relational databases with demonstrable knowledge of but not limited to:
Writing complex SQL queries which include the use of joins, CTEs & window functions.
Query optimization and performance tuning
Debugging slow queries
Creating ETL pipelines that interact with a relational database.
Comfortable working with data sets in excess of 1 billion rows.
Minimum 2 years’ experience working with at least one major RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle etc.
Minimum 1 years’ experience working with a data warehouse such as Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift etc.
Demonstratable experience of working with REST APIs for both retrieving and delivering data.
Confident and well-presented individual who would be comfortable speaking with customers in-person, via email and telephone.
Key attention to detail and strong analytic and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
Ability to use own initiative to troubleshoot problems and find solutions.
Comfortable collaborating with team members across US, EMEA, APAC.
Desirable
Domain knowledge or experience working within the maritime or an adjacent industry.
Practical use of AWS
Experience working in a startup or PE/Scale-Up
A degree in any discipline
